Dear Friends in Christ our King,
Have we thought about why we make the sign of the Cross? We make it so often in our daily lives, especially when we come to church to pray and assist at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. But with the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the 14th of this month of September, it may be worth reflecting on this simple, yet profound action.
The Sign of the Cross is a bridge which brings many graces and blessings from God to our souls. Satan is scared of the sign of the cross, because it reminds him of the victory of love which Jesus won on Calvary. The sign of the Cross makes the demons flee. It makes us strong to overcome and defeat temptation, especially when we make the sign of the cross with holy water.
And so, when you feel tired and disheartened, when you are tempted, when you are worried, make the sign of the Cross! When your tongue gets you in trouble, make the sign of the cross on your lips, as you do at the Gospel of the Mass. When you feel lazy, make the sign of the cross on your heart, reminding yourself of all that Jesus did for you on the Cross. You will be offering up your pains and sorrows—your own daily crosses—in union with the Passion and Cross of Jesus Christ, and thus you, too, will share in His victory over evil.
If only we understood the spiritual power of the sign of the cross made with faith,
we would have nothing to fear. If only we understood how much consolation we bring to the Heart of Jesus with each sign of the Cross, we would frequently pray it. If only we understood that with each sign of the Cross, our everyday actions become worthy of an infinite reward, we would never forget it.
